Assignment I
Power Station
Management
1. Briefly discuss the
impact of the following factors on the cost of power generation: (10*2=20)
a) CUF
Answer : Globally, solar energy
is getting its much deserved attention. As the cost of electricity generation
from solar power system is falling and reaching towards grid parity, solar
market is becoming very attractive investment option and India has been seen as
one of the largest markets with huge potential for the solar industry. The
Indian government has set a new interim target for solar of 9GW of grid
connected solar energy by
b) Availability
Answer : Availability affects the
cost of power generation in this way :
At a 5% discount rate, the
liveliest costs of generating electricity from gas-fired power plants vary
between 37 and 60 USD/MWh but in
most cases it is lower than 55 USD/MWh. The investment cost
represents less than 15% of total
liveliest costs; while O&M cost accounts for less than 10% in most
cases. Fuel cost represents on
average nearly 80% of the total liveliest cost and up to nearly 90% in some
cases. Consequently, the assumptions made by respondents on gas prices at the
date of commissioning and their escalation rates are driving factors in the
estimated liveliest costs of gas generated electricity. The current gas prices
are
2. Comment on the coal
scenario in India and its impact on Indian power sector. (15)
Answer : Introduction
Energy has been universally
recognized as one of the most important inputs for economic growth and human
development. There is a strong two-way relationship between economic
development and energy consumption. On one hand, growth of an economy, with its
global competitiveness, hinges on the availability of cost-effective and
environmentally benign energy sources, and on the other hand, the level of
economic development has been observed to be reliant on the energy demand.
3. For efficient
operation of a coal fired thermal power plant, which factors need to be
controlled? (15)
Answer : At present 54.09% or
93918.38 MW (Data Source CEA, as on
31/03/2011) of total electricity production in India is from Coal Based
Thermal Power Station. A coal based thermal power plant converts the chemical
energy of the coal into electrical energy. This is achieved by raising the
steam in the boilers, expanding it through the turbine and coupling the
turbines to the generators which converts mechanical energy into electrical
energy.
In a coal based power plant coal
is transported
4. Assuming yourself as
the Head of Operations of a Power Station, discuss the possible routes for
revenue maximization from operation of the station. (50)
Answer : The Crucial Role of Operations and Maintenance in Maximizing Financial
Results of PV Power Plants
Italy boasts nearly 20,000 PV
plants each with a capacity of 100 kWp or higher, with 5 GW of O&M
contracts opening up this year and another 2 GW in 2014. Many plant owners and
asset managers face important decisions relating to investing in the right
O&M services in order to preserve and increase the financial returns of the
PV plants.
“PV plant owners need to
understand if the services provided by an O&M provider are matching their
needs, which means they also have to be able to recognize which kind of problem
the plant has: in this way they will have the chance to minimize O&M costs”
– states Pierre D’Amours, Executive Vice President of Solar Forensics.
